How to Get From JFK to Manhattan: Every Option Compared

You’ve landed at JFK and Manhattan is about 15 miles away. Here are the realistic ways to get there, what each is like with luggage, and when a private car is worth it.

AirTrain and the subway

The AirTrain links every JFK terminal to Jamaica and Howard Beach stations, where you change to the subway (E, J and Z at Jamaica; A at Howard Beach). It’s the cheapest option and avoids road traffic, but expect around an hour to Midtown, stairs and crowded cars with suitcases.

Best for: solo travelers with a carry-on who know the subway.

AirTrain and the Long Island Rail Road

At Jamaica you can switch from the AirTrain to the LIRR, which reaches Penn Station or Grand Central Madison quickly. It costs more than the subway and still means two transfers with bags, but it’s the fastest rail option.

Best for: light travelers staying near Penn Station or Grand Central.

Yellow taxi

Taxis line up at every terminal and charge a flat fare to Manhattan, plus tolls, surcharges and tip; check the current rate on the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission website. Waits at the taxi stand can be long at peak times, and you get whatever car is next.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft pick up at designated areas, which can mean a walk or a shuttle. Prices swing with demand, so a late-night arrival or a rainy evening can cost far more than expected.

Private car service

A car service is booked before you fly at a price you see upfront. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no charge and takes you door to door. For families, groups, business travelers and anyone landing late, it’s the least stressful option, and an SUV or Sprinter split between several people is often good value. See JFK car service.

How long does it take?

Manhattan’s congestion pricing zone below 60th Street also adds a surcharge to vehicle trips into the zone.

  • Subway via AirTrain: about 60 to 75 minutes to Midtown.

  • LIRR via AirTrain: about 35 to 50 minutes, including the transfer.

  • Car, taxi or rideshare: anywhere from 35 minutes late at night to 90 minutes or more at rush hour.
